Rigging rope is a highly versatile rope, used in tree surgery work, in shipyards and on theatre sets. Working in such environments can be dangerous even with the right equipment, so it is essential that you select the appropriate rope and keep it in good condition to prevent accidents.

Rigging ropes need to be strong enough to lift heavy objects and have a high level of resistance to withstand repeated use with heavy loads in both internal and external environments.

What is rigging rope used for?

The most common rigging applications are pulling or hoisting a sail, or when rigging a stage or theatre set. Arborist rigging ropes are also available and these are used to assist with pulling trees and limbs. While these categories and industries are unrelated, they all require reliable rigging products.

What is arborist rigging rope?

An arborist rigging line or rope is used by tree surgeons to safely lower limbs to the floor. Such rope must be capable of holding hundreds of pounds of force and weight. Kernmantle ropes have a strong core but most of the load is carried by the tight double braided cover that gives the rope its high strength properties and abrasion resistance. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethene items are also recommended for arborists when they are working with extremely heavy loads.

When is rigging rope used?

Rigging ropes are needed in sailing operations, especially when it comes to hoisting and lowering sails and in theatre or stage operations.

When it comes to rigging the sail of a boat, then we recommend Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethene (UHMWPE) for best results. This is an extremely high strength yet lightweight rope that is a safer alternative to wire rope or those with a wire core. UHMWPE has a low stretchability and a high abrasion resistance making it ideal for use as halyards and downhauls.

UHMWPE can also be used for the rigging of a stage or movie set. It has a high breaking strain and is lightweight and safer compared to wire alternatives that you may search for. Theatre rope or stage ropes need to be safe, secure, quiet and unnoticeable. They should also be effective in hot conditions, as they may be placed near lights for long periods of time.

We stock Heat-treated 12 strand single braid Dyneema Equivalent UHMWPE Stealth rope with polyurethane coating, which you can order directly through the website.

This high strength rope is designed for high load applications where ultra-low stretch is required. The heat treatment and polyurethane coating increase the rope’s resistance. This is a Southern Ropes product and is very similar to the Dyneema Rope brand– it floats, is hydrophobic, chemical and UV resistant plus it’s stronger and safer than wire.
